ROA Honors Army Reserve Outstanding Junior Officer of the Year

Captain Timothy H. (Tim) Nelson, U.S. Army Reserve, has received the prestigious ROA Major General Strom Thurmond Award—presented to the country’s U.S. Army Reserve outstanding junior officer of the year.  Captain Nelson is the commander of the 721st Engineer Company (Horizontal Construction), Grand Prairie, Texas. At the time of his award nomination, he was commander, Company A, 980th Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy), Grand Prairie.  The award was presented recently during ROA’s national conference in Washington, D.C., where the organization is headquartered.

Nelson is a Life Member of the Reserve Officers Association and a member of the Greater Dallas Chapter of the Department of Texas.  ROA was established in 1922, and for more than 85 years has supported the Reserve components of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Public Health Service and NOAA.

One of Nelson’s previous military assignments was as a platoon leader, B Company, 489th Engineer Battalion (C) (M) in Iraq and Kuwait.  His military decorations include the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.  According to Brigadier General Philip L. Hanaran, USAR, commanding general, HQ U.S. Army 90th Regional Readiness Command, “Captain Nelson is an exceptional Citizen Soldier and Warrior ... [who] excels in his civilian occupation, his company command, and also as a valuable community asset.  He has demonstrated the leadership, knowledge, courage, and patience of an outstanding officer.”

In civilian life, Nelson resides in Frisco, Texas.

ROA is chartered by Congress “to support a military policy for the United States that will provide adequate national security and to promote the development and execution thereof...” The ROA award is named in honor of the late Major General Strom Thurmond, U.S. Army Reserve (Ret.), who served as the association’s National President, 1954--55.  Thurmond is best known for having been a U.S. Senator representing South Carolina for many years.
